A:Hello! Fancy meeting you here!

B:Hi, Martin! What brings you here?

A:My new job. My office is right across this street.

B:I can’t talk. I gotta go.

甲:嗨， 真湊巧， 竟在這兒遇見你！

乙:真巧，馬田 ! 甚麼風吹你來的？

甲:我的新工作。我的辦公室就在馬路對面。

乙:不講啦，我要走了。



如果你意外地發現自己心儀的對象竟然就在面前，你應該趕快過去跟他說："Hey！

Fancy meeting you here！" 「竟然在這個地方碰到你！」通常我們說這句話的時

候一定屬於不期而遇、萬萬未有想到，所以你可以在這句話前加個「助語詞」，例

如“Hello！”或是“Hey！”

如人家跟你說：“Hey！Fancy meeting you here！”你可以繼續說：“What

brings you here ?”「甚麼風把你吹來啦？」



想不到碰見你！ 古德明



Fancy作動詞用，意思是「想像」，口語上常用來起句，有「真想不到」的感歎含

義，例如：

(1) Fancy that! He’s falling in love !（他戀愛了，真想不到！）

(2) Fancy my sister / sister's falling in love with him !（想不到我妹妹

愛上了他！）除了說Fancy that ! 這fancy一般直接帶出動名詞 (gerund，即ing形式動詞)，Fancy meeting you here ! 是另一例子。

意外碰到人家，除了說Fancy meeting you here. 表示驚奇，還有幾個習慣說法：

(1) Imagine meeting you here !（想不到在這裡碰到你！）

(2) What a surprise to meet you here ! （在這裡碰到你，真想不到！）

(3) Never thought I'd see you here !（絕對想不到會在這裡碰到你！）要語氣隨便一點，還可以說：What are you doing in this neck of the woods ? / What brings

you to this neck of the woods ?（你在這裡幹甚麼？╱甚麼風把你吹來啦？）

This neck of the woods是美國口語，不宜用於嚴肅的寫作。Neck本來指脖子般狹

長的土地， 從前美國西南部 (the southwest) 樹木豐茂，凡有人聚居的地方，都

叫做a neck of the woods（樹林中的頸狀地帶）。後來 a neck of the woods這

成語遍傳美國，成為「地帶」的意思，例如：Property prices have slumped in

this neck of the woods.（這一帶的房地產價格暴跌了）。
