A:Oh, hello.

B:Hello. We seem to be running into each other a lot lately.

A:Yes, we do.

B:Beautiful day, isn't it?

A:Yes, it is.

甲:噢,你好 !

乙:你好。最近我們好像經常碰到呢 !

甲:嗯,說得也是。

乙:天朗氣清,是不是?

甲:嗯,是啊 !

在"We seem to be running into each other a lot lately."的句子裡,除了

"running into"之外,你還可以用"bumping into". 但字面上的解釋,"running

into"跟"bumping into"好像是跑進甚麼東面、撞到甚麼東西,但這個用法絕對沒

有身體上的接觸,而只是偶然碰上,視線上的接觸而已。

We seem to be running into each other a lot lately的lately和late不同。

Late是「遲」或「晚」,用作形容詞 (adjective) 或副詞 (adverb) 都可以,例

如:

(1) The late student was punished.(那個遲到的學生受到懲罰。)

(2) He arrived late.(他遲到了。)第二句的late是副詞,但不加 ”ly”,和

一般副詞不同。

Lately也是副詞,意思是「最近」,和recently同義,例如:He has been very

quiet lately(他最近很沉默)。「最近」的另一說法是of late,例如:He has

been very quiet of late. Of late 沒有lately那麼常用,但和lately一樣,通常都

是配完成式動詞 (perfect tense),偶然也會配現在式 (present tense),例如:He

isvery quiet lately / of late.

Run into / bump into somebody即「偶然遇到某人」,此外還有happen on /

come across somebody 的說法,例如:I happened on / came across an old

classmate this morning.(我今早偶然碰到一個舊同學。)

人家偷偷跟著你,你說: We seem to be running into each other a lot

lately. 是把「有心跟蹤」當你「無意碰上」,不當面點破,可謂客氣,假如你不

喜歡他這樣跟著你,可直斥其非:You have been stalking me lately.(你近來

常常跟蹤我。)

Stalk就是「討厭地悄悄跟蹤」。明星、美麗的女郎都常常會這樣給人騷擾,假如

不勝其煩,可向法庭申請禁制令 (injunction)呢。
